Figuring out your Future You - Journal Prompts
Comparison is important when looking at current "you" versus your past and future selfs.
I wrote about ‘giving up’ this week, suggesting that our ego or limiting beliefs can get in the way of stopping something we’re currently failing at, to then start anew.
My suggestion, then, was that changing who you are means understanding who you want to be first, then to re-write your life as that person.
What is your idealized self?
What do they look like?
What is that measure of success?
What does it take to get it?
What does it take to keep it?
Whether it’s about goal setting, lifestyle shifting, or habit-forming, if you don’t know where you're going, your trip will zig-zag all the way to nowhere.
Let’s dig into defining that with some journal prompts this weekend.
Who are you right now?
Consider your life right now, the thing that you feel that you lack. What is missing, or what do you think your goal will accomplish. Consider:
What your day-to-day looks like?
What do you want to change? Why?
Where did you come from, have you already changed? (Recognize any growth you’ve already made.)
Who do you want to be?
Recognizing what you’re “missing” right now, think about what would actually change that.
What does that future you look like? How are they different?
What needs to change, possessions or perspective?
What is the ‘easiest’ way to make that change or accomplish that goal?
What is your path forward?
Walk a mile in your shoes.
Knowing who you are now, what you feel is missing or that you want to change, and knowing what your future self is doing, consider what their life is like. Be honest with yourself. Look at people who have what you think you want, and consider what their life is like. Finally, consider what you’re willing to change… what you’re willing to give up, to become that future version.
Most importantly, consider their mindset.
What is important to them?
What do they believe?
What current beliefs do you have that might be getting in your way, about money? About success? About change?
There is a lot to consider in changing your life, but there are two things that are fundamental to that change.
Your mindset - How you see your life, your challenges and your opportunities.
Your commitment - How willing you are to give up habits (good or bad) or abandon things that aren’t working to stay moving forward.
Bonus Prompt: Write a simple commitment to actively seek opportunities in your life that will help you make the changes you seek.
