How does this affect the Home Page and Welcome Email?
This will depend on the options you select when creating the section.
- If you have it set to automatically add new subscribers, then it doesn't really affect much. I state my writing cadence up front, one post from mindfullish on Mondays, one post from Channeling Chaos on Wednesdays.
- If you opt to not auto-add people to the new section when they subscribe then the onus is on you to 'advertise' it in some manner.
(I wouldn't do a "click to subscribe" message either, it adds complexity.)
How do I message it to users?
When I migrated from my other newsletter to this new section, I did a post to my old list stating that it was happening and included instructions for how to subscribe or unsubscribe from diferent sections. For anyone new to my newsletter, I don't really try to explain it, since it's largely moot. Now that I have this new, third section that doesn't automatically include people, I'll figure out how and when I'll advertise it.
The main benefit of multiple sections vs multiple newsletters is, I'm always talking to the same crowd now and can easily share a universal message if something is going to change. When I post a note, I don't have to try to make sure people go to the right newsletter from my post, when I reference newsletters elsewhere I don't have to say 'if you like blah, join this one, etc.)
This was all about simplifying things since complication just gives me reasons to procrastinate. I was starting to bias one vs the other before merging, giving an 'easy out' to not write on one that week. That isn't what I wanted, so this keeps me motivated and moving.
The one thing that I don't like, I have fewer branding and organization options for the Section than I do for a Publication.
My next post in this section is going to be about managing subscriptions to these different sections, which you're free to steal.
Beyond that, there are navigation tools you can put on your page to make it easier to steer people to the sections. I'll also have a 'Start Here' post that is part "About", part "Sales Page" and part "How to get Value from all the different content."
This is all really helpful, thank you! I’m going to poke around a bit here and see what it looks like on your site. Maybe this would work for me after all, but there’s lots to consider. Mainly, I don’t want to lose subscribers to my main publication by overwhelming them with an additional email every week that they might not want to receive. Thanks for this! So much detail! :)
How does that impact your homepage and welcome email?
I’m curious about this for sure since I’m currently managing two, but tbh this sounds confusing for subscribers.
I can’t imagine myself saying short and sweet “click here to also subscribe to this other section”
Do you have examples for how you communicate this to readers? Maybe it’s easier than I think but it doesn’t sound super intuitive.
And then finally, in your opinion what’s the main benefit to having sections vs just two publications?
Thanks for starting my FAQ for me. (c:
